Welcome to a new video series from C’mon, Mini Wonders Mini Series! We’ll be featuring monthly projects that we do in our weekly toddler themed workshop, Mini Wonders. You can see all of our upcoming workshops at http://bit.ly/2iSUX3O.
On November 30th, our Mini Wonders class is going to be focusing on the story, Dragons Love Tacos! We are going to being exploring our senses with taco scented play dough. See how easy it is to make at home and join us for class as we read the story, make our own tacos and more!
Taco Play Dough Recipe:
2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 cups water
2 tablespoons coconut oil
Red food coloring
If using a hot plate, begin with the dry ingredients. Add 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 tablespoons cream of tartar and mix dry ingredients together. Add 2 cups water and 2 tablespoons coconut oil (but any oil will do – i.e. vegetable, canola – if that is all you have in your pantry). Mix well. Add red food coloring. Mix.
Heat hot plate to setting of 225*. Stir mixture. It will begin to solidfy, much like scrambled eggs. Continue to cook play dough until it is no longer runny. Transfer to a cookie tray.
Either allow play dough to cool enough to knead taco seasoning in using your hands or use mixing spoon if it is still hot. Add 1/2 packet (or whole packet if you would like a stronger scent) of taco seasoning to play dough. Knead until soft. Store in airtight container or a plastic zip bag. Store up to 1 month at room temp or 3 months in the fridge.
Alternative to hot plate: Mix dry ingredients in a bowl. Heat water to almost boiling, not quite. Add 2 cups hot water, 2 tablespoons coconut oil. Mix. Add food coloring. Mix. Knead in taco seasoning once play dough cools off.
